Pair of Early Chinese Incense Holders

$675.00

Chinese guardian lions, known as shishi or fu dogs, are ancient symbols of guardianship and protection. Originating with Indian Buddist traditions, it became customary in many regions throughout Asia to place pairs of these lion-dog figures in temples, tombs, shrines, and other important places to ward off negative energy and threats. These incense holders bear an antique printed label that states they date back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and are made of turquoise-glazed ceramic. They have some minor chips and wear that is consistent with the impressive age of these items, as shown in the photos. Each holder measures approximately 3.75 inches wide by 2 inches deep by 5 inches tall.
